A new edition about orthopedic genius Gavriil Ilizarov and his method has been published in 2018. The book “Ilizarov’s philosophy” written by Alexander Gubin, the CEO of the Ilizarov Center, assembles the unique archive photo material and lectures on the Ilizarov philosophy. It will be interesting for medical specialists and social workers as well as for patients and their families, because it is about key ideas important for people giving them optimism and healing potential.

New scientific trend in Ilizarov Center is biodegradable implants made of phosphate calcium and polylactic acid composite. The implant is printed on 3D printer and completely resorbs when the bone tissue is restored. It can be used in management of patients with vast bone defects, systemic pathologies of the skeleton, like rikets, Ollier disease, congenital pseudoarthrosis, etc. As commented professor Arnold Popkov, the head researcher of laboratory of deformity correction and limb lengthening of the Ilizarov Center, after successful experimental study in dogs, the implants allow to make treatment period of fractures and orthopedic pathologies 2-4 fold shorter.

Electronic version of the Ilizarov journal of clinical and experimental orthopedics “Genij Ortopedii” is now accessible in Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ). DOAJ is on-line platform that includes scientific revues with open access using the system of quality control of the content. The directory unites over 10 000 journals (about 2 000 000 articles) from 134 countries, including 163 Russian editions.

Five Nigerian doctors has successfully completed Fellowship in the Ilizarov Center and got certificates on transosseous osteosynthesis. The training under the Fellow AOSpine program lasted from March to August.
August, 24
Spine surgeons of the Ilizarov Center successfully operated on a patient with a rare type of tumor – hemangiopericytoma. About 300 cases are registered all over the world. The female patient undergoes treatment of the oncologic disease (grade 4) in Chelyabinsk and was admitted to the Center of low-invasive spine surgery and oncovertebrology of the Ilizarov Center with metastatic lesion of the spine followed by pathologic fracture of vertebra with spinal cord compression. Dr Sergey Lulin, the head of the Center of low-invasive spine surgery and oncovertebrology of the Ilizarov Center comments, that a unique multidisciplinary collaboration between oncologists and neurosurgeons in Kurgan allows to help oncologic patients when the spine is involved, to improve their life quality.

Over 1000 medical specialists participated in the Forum of Orthopedic Surgery Academy in China that was held from 24 to 26 of August. An invited speaker from Kurgan CEO of the Ilizarov Center Alexander Gubin shared experience of organizing the traumatologic-orthopedic center functioning, Ilizarov philosophy, effective techniques of pelvic ring reconstruction.

Ilizarov mini-fellowship course from 20 to 31 of August is attended by doctors from USA and Denmark. It is the second visit for the surgeon from Denmark, almost 10 years ago she came to Kurgan for the first time to learn the method that cured so many patients all over the world. Two Fellows will participate in lectures, workshops, case discussions and surgeries.
