7-year old Anya is swimming in the swimming pool. Water is the safe environment. Anya has strong will and very brittle “crystal” bones due to very rare genetic disease, osteogenesis imperfecta. Almost any motion can cause bone fracture and deformity in “crystal” people.
From mass media Anya’s family learnt about possibility of surgical treatment of brittle bones in the Ilizarov Centre.
The goal of the surgery, in the opinion of Dr. Dmitry Popkov, orthopaedic surgeon of the Ilizarov Centre, is not only to correct deformities, but also to provide functional conditions of development and to prevent severe orthopaedic complications.
The girl underwent the surgery at the age of two. After the first stage of treatment Anya’s femurs were reinforced with elastic nails; these nails could prevent severe deformities and displacement in case of fractures. Only after the surgery the two-year-old Anya was able to stand and her family was searching for effective ways of rehabilitation. So, swimming was chosen. In addition to surgical treatment every three months Anya need a course of medical therapy to strengthen the bone tissue. Anya also studies in Art school; she likes to take care of plants and flowers.
Anya’s mother learned about new intramedullary telescopic nails and applied to the Ilizarov Centre for consultation again.
“Anya grew up, her bones became bigger and there is a need to replace the flexible nails by the new intramedullary system with telescopic titanium nails, developed in Russia,” comments Dr.D.A.Popkov. Intramedullary telescopic nail is the result of collaboration of Kurgan and Tomsk researchers. Soon Anya will undergo the surgery; and in future she plans to fulfil her dream and become a swimming coach.
